I'm self-employed as an article writer and freelance artist. I also work as a volunteer teacher for teenagers and vulnerable adults. I've been padding around the furry and tf fandoms since 1996.
Why set up the TF clinic ?
I set up the TF Clinic because I had a lot of interest from people who wanted to see more of my kind of TF, but who couldn't afford their own commissions. I did some Sales and brought my prices right down because – hey – I love what I do, so I could manage it, right ?
Unfortunately, I ended up working 12 hour days for $2 or less an hour. I didn't mind dropping below the bread-line again, but after a couple of months I started to burn-out. The obvious answer was to lower the quality and increase the quantity, but I just didn't want to do that.
Enter crowdfunding :)
How much art appears on here is down to donations. The more people donate, the more time I can spend making and submitting art for everyone to enjoy. I'll still be keeping it cheap, but since I can afford to spend more time on it - I can :)
Why Patreon ?
When I first started the Clinic, half of my admin time was spent trying to find a way for supporters to jump on board with the Clinic without it being a hassle for them. Whatever your thoughts on Patreon, having looked into it, it's a great vehicle for this kind of crowdfunding. Our Patreon page has rewards for every tier and I love it, because not only does it let me give extra rewards to people who fund more, but I also only get paid when I deliver. Given how tired we all are of Kickstarter campaigns falling apart, I think that Patreon has it right for customer confidence. But that all sounds very office-speak; go check it out :)
The Big Illness
In early 2014, I went into organ failure due to a fairly common and usually very preventable illness, and dropped out of work.
The recovery was slow, prone to massive relapse, and totally unpredictable. For those who won't have a chance to read my blog post on 6th May, here is the TLDR :
~ I have been sick. Very, very sick. I have missed you all and the kind words I've received have been an amazing and very important part of my recovery. Please know that I am truly sorry for being gone so long, but I'm not asking for forgiveness. You don't owe me that. I owe you, as a fan who Watches me, who supports me and (hopefully) as one of the amazing people who lets me spend more time drawing than I ever thought I could. What I owe you is some art worth the wait. I hope to give you that. Thank you for sticking with me. ~
